During this semester, creating this wiki has taught me a lot about working together as a team and about your wiki topic as well. I feel that we all contributed an equal amount and we all did an excellent job on our wiki page. At the beginning of the semester, our wiki was off to a slow start but once we all started to add information, it all started to come together. It feels great to know that our wiki page is completed and that everyone did a great job. I look forward to doing another project like this again and working with another group to accomplish a common goal. This wiki was a challenge for the whole class but our group managed to pull it off and finish it in time. Thanks.

"Indicators of teams that are not working effectively include staff moaning and complaining, inability to deal with issues, small cliques developing within teams, over reliance on team captains and a lack of individual/team commitment to projects. These clues indicate that the group has lost sight of the goals, or responsibility towards the project as a whole" (Haffenden. J.R.,March 2009 Para 1).

Before we can discuss our reason for picking groups over individuals, we must first compare group problem solving versus individual problem solving. Groups can be defined as two or more individuals working toward a common goal to which they are mutually accountable (Human Relations, 2009). Decision making by groups falls into two catagories, Rational and Political. The rational theory is based on logic, first by establishing goals, then determining the alternatives and propose a solution based on the goals established at the begining. Political decision making is based on people bringing pre-established ideas and biased thoughts prior to setting goals. A final decision may have alternative motives and the decision may not be based on the best alternative.
Groups usually make decisions one of two ways either by brainstorming or using the Nominal Group Technique. The brainstorming technique is used when a large number of solutions to the problem is desirable. The Nominal Group Technique is used to solve a specific problem.

"Working alone is like trying to pick up a pencil with only one finger...Even if that one finger is extremely strong; it will prove almost impossible to pick up that pencil unless you use your other fingers or some other part of your hand. Teamwork is a bit like using all of your fingers. Each one is unique and contributes something different, but they unite in pursuit of a common goal." (Haffenden. J.R.,March 2009 Para 4)

Working with other people helps groups to: "reject erroneous responses and effectively process information," said lead author Patrick Laughlin, PhD, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
So, is this really the case? Leading by example, Kelloggs(Haffenden. J.R.,March 2009 Para 1)

Working in teams is an extremely effective way to ensure that objectives are met, and according to the latest research, spending time improving the way your business uses teams plays a very important part in increasing productivity. So, what solutions do we have to ensure that your teams are working cohesively? Tom from Freshtracks.co.uk, a team building and team development company, explains that: "Because the potential performance of a team is greater than the sum of its parts, it is important to get all the participants together to understand these theories as well as the importance of their team and the benefits of working together."
Companies which successfully utilise teams benefit from "team responses". These include a heightened level of responsibility for decisions, greater synergy, higher levels of commitment, clear and honest self-evaluation, and a team willing to seek new approaches to challenges as well as increased positivity, productivity and decisiveness. But how do you know when your team is not working effectively?
Performance psychology looks into how variables affect the performance of teams or individuals. Indicatorsorientation.'" (Haffenden. J.R.,March 2009 Para 2)

Tom continues: "Once players have realised the importance of teamwork the next stagewhole"(Haffenden. J.R.,March 2009 Para 1)
"working alone is to foster an environment which is fun, where people choose a positive attitude and relationships are more than skin deep. We have run many team building programmes focusing on these three key principles of teamwork and the outcome is that participants involved are more able to deal with the stresses and strains of the modern working environment."
Terry Orlick, Ph.D., the president of the International Society for Mental Training and Excellence, describes companies which suffer from low team effectiveness as: "tryinglike trying to pick

Who still agrees that working in groups is not effective? Through teamwork we can all connect and consequently become more decisive, more productive and more profitable. A good team should drive a company through the winning posts and ensure every challenge is met with a positive and excited stance.

I feel this wiki is excellent proof of the positives and negatives of working together in a group. Of course it stated off slow and there were some rough patches, not knowing each other well and how we worked together. In the end we all worked hard towards our one goal and collaborated to produce the end result. Some of us were better at researching and some of us were good at the design of the Wiki. In the end putting all of our heads and talents together clearly presented a well put together research wiki. We all have a different way of doing things, thought processes and ways we view things. Bringing in more than one view can help the audience to see the picture more clearly in more way than one. I feel we worked well and I would like to thank all of our group members for their hard effort.
